Class Summary
The function of Gwinnett County Department of Planning and Development is to promote and enhance the quality of life of residents, visitors, property owners, and businesses of Gwinnett County. The Department accomplishes its mission through programs and services that encourage high-quality development as well as maintenance and revitalization of existing neighborhoods. As a Planning Manager, you will be responsible for managing current planning, long-range planning, and planning data services for the County. Long-range planning activities include master planning, community education, and other special projects. Current planning activities include zoning administration, maintaining the Unified Development Ordinance (UDO), supporting the Planning Commission, and related tasks. Planning data services activities include creating and maintaining GIS data, producing maps, and other special projects. You will report to the Planning Division Director.
Other Essential Duties
Managing the day-to-day operations of the Planning Division to include Planning Division staff
Ensuring all required deadlines and procedures are met related to zoning map amendments, waivers, variances, appeals of administrative decisions and related requests
Reviewing and approving staff case reports for the Zoning Board of Appeals, Planning Commission, and Board of Commissioners
Ensuring that annexation requests are processed in a timely manner
Communicating with other County Departments and outside agencies
Attending meetings with residents, developers, design professionals, and others
Attending Zoning Board of Appeals, Planning Commission and Board of Commissioner public hearings
Completing site visits for zoning-related applications, as needed
Managing the Gwinnett County Technical Review Committee
Conducting other special projects including master planning, research and analysis of planning and zoning-related topics; community engagement and education and others
Public Speaking Duties
Presenting to the Zoning Board of Appeals, Planning Commission and Board of Commissioner public hearings
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in planning, landscape architecture, geographic information system (GIS), data analytics, engineering, mathematics, or information technology/computer science
Five years of planning experience
Two years of supervisory experience
Valid driver’s license
An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job will also be considered.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in planning, data analytics, mathematics, information technology/computer science
Previous supervisory experience preferred
Previous local government planning experience preferred
