Located in the heart of the Indian Ocean, near the coast of Madagascar, is Reunion Island. With stunning terrain ranging from mammoth mountains to white and black sand beaches, Reunion Island was formed due to volcanic activity under the ocean nearly 3 million years ago. Covered in unique flora and fauna and home to exotic aquatic life, Reunion Island has a distinct ecosystem that needs to be explored to believe. If you like to stay active on your vacations, the island’s endless list of adrenaline-pumping activities will have you crossing things off your bucket list. If you prefer just relaxing and doing nothing while on holiday, get ready to unwind on the many pristine beaches of the incredible island. Even when it comes to getting visas, it’s a rather easy process. Although it is a French Overseas Territory, you don’t require a Schengen visa to travel to Reunion. When it’s safe to travel again, plan a trip to Reunion Island for a magical experience that you will remember for years to come. Here’s a look at just a few of the things you can do there:
Blessed with unique terrain that ranges from volcanic mountains to pristine beaches, Reunion Island lets you enjoy the best of both worlds. With over 900km of marked trails that traverse through dense rainforests in the east, sugarcane fields in the west, lunar landscapes on the volcano and rocky shorelines, the island welcomes experienced trekkers and novices alike. If you’re in the mood for an adventure like no other, take on the Piton de la Fournaise or Piton des Neiges. Classified as a natural World Heritage Site by UNESCO, Piton de la Fournaise is around 2,632 metres above sea level, and leads you past beaches, craters and rainforests to the plains of Plaine de Sables. Piton des Neiges is a volcano that has been dormant for nearly 120 centuries, and is responsible for nearly two-thirds of the island’s landmass. The trek to the top requires a fair bot of fitness and expertise, but the view is to die for. If you prefer a less active session, drive up to the summit of Maido, which offers a panoramic view of the Mafate Cirque and the West Coast. Read the full travel article here.
