Salar de Uyuni is perhaps Bolivia’s best-known geological wonder, thanks to its blindingly white landscape. From December through April, rainwater blankets the salt-crusted surface, creating a mirror effect with the deep blue sky, melding into the distant horizon. Hot on the heels of Kachi Lodge—featured in TIME’s 2019 World’s Greatest Places—another destination hotel recently opened near the famous salt flats: Explora’s Uyuni Lodge, a minimalist base close to Tunupa volcano and run in partnership with local families.
