Also known as OBX, youngsters may recognize the name as a current teen TV drama series on Netflix, but the history of the Outer Banks goes as far back as the 16th century when European settlers tried to establish a colony, under orders from Sir Walter Raleigh. Ever since, the Outer Banks has been the site of important historical events.

Pirates started flocking to the shore of the Outer Banks at the same time as the English, one of them being the legendary Blackbeard whose favorite hideout was Ocracoke Island in the southern part of the Outer Banks.
