America will face a shortage of electricians in the near future, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA). The trade group says that 7,000 electricians join the field each year, but 10,000 retire. The BLS reports that employment of electricians is projected to grow 10% from 2018 to 2028 — faster than the average for all occupations.
The shortage is due to more than the number of retiring electricians outpacing that of new electricians. After the recession forced thousands of contractors out of business, many didn’t return. Many also attribute the shortage to the elimination of shop class in high school, a focus on college over trade schools and a negative perception of the job as grueling work with long hours and no career advancement.Read More
