Hi everyone, it’s Liz—welcome back to Balance and Rhythm! Today we’re going on a before and after tour of our upstairs bathroom remodel. Without further ado, here’s our wabi sabi bathroom transformation.
If you’ve been with this channel for a while, you know we love warm, natural interiors. That’s the feeling we wanted to bring into our home as we continue renovating, starting upstairs.
We had very red Brazilian cherry floors, which we toned down dramatically with a much darker finish. Since the bathroom is adjacent, we wanted both areas to feel cohesive.
We were inspired by Japandi style, a blend of Scandinavian and Japanese aesthetics, and focused on natural materials, black accents, and the wabi sabi philosophy of beauty in imperfection.
We started with the flooring, selecting a warm gray 24x24 porcelain tile with a natural stone look. We replaced the wide-grouted ceramic tile and overpainted wood baseboards with a modern bullnose base for a cleaner look. The tone offered just enough contrast to the wood floors.

For a cohesive look, we chose a 3x12 ceramic tile called Raku, named after the Japanese pottery style. It gives that “perfectly imperfect” texture we were looking for. Read more...
