While global electric vehicle sales continue to grow, that growth isn’t equally spread out. Some markets grow faster than others, while some have even experienced a decline. Still, despite this fragmentation, 2025 is a year when overall global EV sales are set to continue. The reason for this fragmented growth is either due to a country’s EV infrastructure not keeping up with demand, political decisions, or a combination of both. As a result, hybrids continue to outpace EV growth in markets like North America.
There is, however, another type of electrified vehicle that, in 2025, has outpaced traditional hybrids—the range-extender EV (REEV). So, what’s an REEV, and why has it outpaced traditional hybrid sales worldwide?
Electrified vehicle sales mean a combination of all electrified technologies, ranging from hybrids, plug-in hybrids, EVs, and more recently, the range-extender EV. Whereas hybrids have taken to the limelight as a stopgap solution, the range-extender EV has blasted through the global charts when it comes to sales growth.
To be clear, range-extender EVs still do not outsell traditional hybrids, nor EVs. Rather, according to BloombergNEF, the range-extender EV is what's experiencing the biggest sales growth. Unsurprisingly, the bulk of this growth comes from China, whose diverse range of locally-manufactured and developed range-extender EVs has attracted numerous car shoppers. As a result, range-extender EV sales have grown by 83 percent in China during the full year 2024, outpacing the growth of EVs, hybrids, and plug-in hybrids. Read more...
