The city has a long and rich history, too. Its location on the eastern end of Lake Ontario near the mouth of the St. Lawrence River gave it immense strategic importance, initially as a trading post and fort for the French in the 1670s. Visit the city today, and there are plenty of reminders of its significant role in shaping the young nation of Canada, from historic fortifications and public buildings to important links such as Rideau Canal, a once vital transportation link to Ottawa and the interior of Ontario that is now busy with recreational boating traffic.
