8 Amazing Things to do in Essaouira From Surf Lessons to Food Tours

In the 1960s Essaouira was the well-kept secret of intrepid surfers in search of an endless summer. Feel-good travellers gradually caught on, coming not just for Morocco’s famous right-hand break, but for sunrise yoga and sunset strolls, horses to gallop through the surf and camels to lollop across the dunes. There’s joy-a-plenty in simply mooching the morning fish market knocking back freshly shucked oysters, browsing the make-shift studios of the art naïf masters at the local joutiya (flea market), or simply basking in the steam of a hammam. These days, even getting there, is all part of the experience.

Savour the food and scenery of a road less travelled

Tasting Marrakech turns the three-hour transfer from Marrakech to Essaouira into a food-lovers, back roads drive. As amber-hued hills turn to rolling pasture and Argan trees, you’ll stop at an authentic road-side eatery for goat tagine cooked in traditional Berber style - “it’s not sweet at all and includes lots of fresh seasonal vegetables and Argan oil,” says founder Mandy Sinclair – a goat’s cheese tasting, and locally made, organic wines.

Insider tip: Stay the night at the Domaine Vall d’Argan winery. Founded by Charles Mélia who hails from the Châteauneuf-du-Pape, he spearheaded Morocco’s first organic wines. Read the full travel article here.
