It's been almost three years since Toyota launched its first-ever mainstream battery-electric vehicle here in North America. Since Europe announced its mandate to try and ban the sale of internal-combustion-powered vehicles for the sake of polar bears and trees, automakers made a hardcore jump onto the EV bandwagon to try and catch the wave. Toyota jumped on board with the bZ4X, one of the premiere vehicles built on the company's dedicated e-TNGA modular platform engineered specifically for electric vehicles.
But like many EVs, the bZ4X, and its platform cousin, the Subaru Solterra, were met with lukewarm reception. Not only did the American public feel iffy about adopting EVs—for a multitude of reasons such as challenges with charging infrastructure, times, and total driving range—but the bZ4X had its own shortcomings. Although a fine-driving vehicle, its lackluster performance in all the metrics that truly matter to EV buyers (battery driving range, lack of app connectivity and other features regarding vehicle status and battery charge state, and slow charging times), made the bZ4X a hard sell to EV adopters. It ultimately just felt like a lazy effort.
Toyota heard and understood the critical feedback and thus, went back to the drawing board to address these primary criticisms.
