Overview
The Volkswagen GTI is one of the brand's most well-known vehicles. It's long offered enhanced performance over the regular Golf hatchback (which isn't even offered anymore) and more fun behind the wheel without spending too much money in the process. For 2025, the GTI is a better product thanks to a new infotainment system and improved user controls. But there is one change we're disappointed with.
Edmunds spotlight: Better tech for 2025, but no manual transmission
Our biggest issue with the 2022-2024 GTI was its frustrating center touchscreen. It was slow to respond and had software that would occasionally glitch out. Another issue: The slider controls for the temperature and volume didn't light up, so you couldn't see them at night. Volkswagen has addressed all of these gripes with the 2025 model, making the user experience much better. Unfortunately, the driving experience won't be quite the same for the 2025 GTI. Volkswagen has discontinued the manual transmission, leaving the seven-speed automatic transmission as the sole offering. We like the quick-shifting automatic but will miss the extra fun and engagement the manual offered.
Competitors to consider
If you're interested exclusively in a hatchback, the GTI occupies a price point that other automakers have ignored. The Honda Civic Type R and Toyota GR Corolla both offer more power and capability than the VW, but they're each far more expensive to start. Most comparable in price and performance is the Hyundai Elantra N sedan; it's certainly worth checking out. Other possible options include the all-wheel-drive Subaru WRX or the lightweight Subaru BRZ and Toyota GR86 coupes. Read more...
